Chairpersons’ Address Chairpersons’ Address

Dear friends and colleagues,

It is our pleasure to invite you to the 5th International Eijkman Conference on the Eijkman Institute comes of ages: vitamins, genomics, and welfare which will be held in Borobudur Hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia, from 8-10 November 2011

The International Eijkman Conference Series was started in 1990 with the First International Eijkman Symposium, which resulted in the re-opening of the institute as the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology. This fifth symposium is special as it marks the 15 years of the inauguration of the new institute by President Soeharto in 1995. The institute traces its origin to the Research Laboratory for Pathology and Bacteriology, founded in 1888 with Christiaan Eijkman as its first Director. The laboratory was designated the Eijkman Institute in 1938 but was closed in the 1960s. After being re-opened in 1993, the institute is a molecular cell biology research institute which in the first instance focuses on problems of human and medical genetics, infectious diseases of the tropics and biomolecular engineering. Thus, the title of this symposium: The Eijkman Institute comes of age: vitamins, genomics and welfare.

The Eijkman Institute is pleased to host and organize this symposium, which has two objectives in mind. This symposium aims to bring together scientists from overseas to stimulate collaboration with Indonesian scientists. It is also our way to introduce young Indonesian scientists to the top scientists in their respective fields.

We have put together a program that covers population genetics, disease susceptibility and nutrition, mitochondrial and infectious diseases, malaria in the era of its elimination, bacterial realated diseases, and emerging infectious diseases and vaccine sicences in post genomic era. These topics cover the research hallmark of the present Eijkman Institute. The symposium intends to bring together more than 200 participants.

The venue, Borobudur Hotel, Jakarta, is located in the heart of Jakarta, close to Presidential palace and Government office. The committee has arranged social programs which include a function dinner.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to the 5th International Eijkman Conference in Jakarta.

Sincerely,
Herawati Sudoyo
Chairpersons of the Organizing Committee
